Stopping a Timer

Learn how to stop a timer, add notes, and handle different stop scenarios.

Overview

When you stop a timer, the time entry is automatically saved. You can add notes before or after stopping, and the entry appears in your calendar and reports.

Method 1: Click the Stop Button

The most straightforward way to stop tracking.

  1. 1
Click the Stop button on the Timer page, or
  2. 2
Click the timer in the header, then click Stop

The timer stops immediately and the entry is saved. You can still edit the entry afterward to add or change notes.

Method 2: Keyboard Shortcut

The fastest way if you're on the Timer page.

ShortcutAction
SpaceToggle timer on/off (on Timer page)

Tip

The Space shortcut acts as a toggle. If a timer is running, it stops. If no timer is running, it starts the most recent topic.

Method 3: Start a Different Topic

When you start a new topic, the current timer stops automatically.

  1. 1
Click a different topic in Quick Start, or use Alt+1-9
  2. 2
The current entry is saved automatically
  3. 3
    The new timer starts immediately

This is the fastest way to switch between tasks without explicitly stopping. Your time is always tracked — no gaps between entries.

Adding Notes When Stopping

You can add notes before or after stopping the timer.

Before Stopping

Type your notes in the notes field while the timer is running. They save automatically as you type. When you stop, everything is already saved.

After Stopping

Click the entry in "Today's Entries" or on the Calendar to open the edit dialog. Add or modify notes, then close. Changes save automatically.

Discarding an Entry

Sometimes you start a timer by accident or change your mind. You can discard the entry instead of saving it.

  1. 1
Click the menu on the timer display
  2. 2
    Select Discard
  3. 3
Confirm the discard in the dialog

Warning

Discarding permanently deletes the entry. You cannot undo this action. If you're unsure, stop the timer normally and delete the entry later.

What Happens Next

  • The time entry is saved with start time, end time, and any notes
  • The entry appears in Today's Entries and on the Calendar
  • If billable, earnings are calculated based on the topic's hourly rate
  • You can edit the entry anytime to adjust time or add notes

Edge Cases

Very short entries (under 1 minute)

Short entries are saved normally. If you accidentally started a timer, use Discard instead of stopping to avoid cluttering your history.

Timer running overnight

If you forget to stop a timer, edit the entry afterward to correct the end time. Click the entry, adjust the end time, and save.

Browser/app closed while timer running

The timer continues running. When you reopen TeeckIn, the timer shows the full elapsed time since you started. Stop it normally.

Stopping while offline

The stop is recorded locally. When you reconnect, the entry syncs to the server. You may see a brief sync indicator.
