Starting a Timer

Learn the different ways to start tracking time in TeeckIn.

Overview

TeeckIn offers three ways to start a timer: clicking a topic in Quick Start, using keyboard shortcuts, or searching with the command palette. Choose whichever method fits your workflow.

Method 1: Quick Start Panel

The fastest way for mouse users. The Quick Start panel shows your recent and pinned topics.

  1. 1
    Navigate to the Timer page
  2. 2
Find your topic in the Quick Start panel on the left
  3. 3
Click the topic to start tracking immediately

Tip

Topics appear in Quick Start based on recent usage. Pin your most-used topics in Account Settings to keep them in fixed positions.

Method 2: Keyboard Shortcuts

For power users who prefer the keyboard. Each slot in Quick Start has a number shortcut.

ShortcutAction
Alt+1Start timer for topic in slot 1
Alt+2...9Start timer for topics in slots 2-9
SpaceToggle timer on/off (on Timer page)

The Space shortcut works like a play/pause button — press once to start the most recent topic, press again to stop.

Tip

The keyboard shortcuts work from any page, not just the Timer page. Press Alt+1 from anywhere in the app to start tracking.

Method 3: Command Palette

Search for any topic from anywhere in the app. Great when you have many topics and don't want to scroll.

  1. 1
    Press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux)
  2. 2
Type the topic name — results filter as you type
  3. 3
Press Enter to start the timer, or click the topic
Actions
Navigation
Start Timer
↑↓ Navigate SelectEsc Close

Try searching for "timer" or "dashboard". Use arrow keys and Enter to navigate.

The command palette also shows recent entries and navigation options. You can search for pages, actions, and more.

What Happens Next

  • The timer starts and appears in the header, visible on all pages
  • The Timer page shows the full timer display with notes and controls
  • Time accumulates until you stop the timer
  • The entry saves automatically — no need to click save

Edge Cases

Already timing another topic

Starting a new topic automatically stops the current timer and saves the entry. The new timer starts immediately. You can add notes to the stopped entry later.

Topic doesn't appear in Quick Start

Quick Start shows your 9 most recent topics plus any pinned topics. If your topic doesn't appear, use the command palette (Cmd+K) to search for it, or create it in Settings first.

Starting a timer while offline

Starting timers requires an internet connection. If you're offline, you'll see an error message. Add the time manually when you're back online.

Troubleshooting

Problem: Timer won't start

  • Check if you already have an active timer (look in the header)
  • Ensure you have tracking permission in team organizations
  • Try refreshing the page
  • Check your internet connection — timers work offline, but initial load requires connection

Problem: Topic not showing in Quick Start

  • Quick Start shows your 9 most recent topics. Use the topic to move it to the top.
  • Pin important topics in Account Settings for permanent placement
  • Use the command palette (Cmd+K) to find any topic
